Asanas challenge and attune us to the deep flows of our creative power, the innermost power that generates the body and guides us to our own source. This course acts as a bridge between the experiential depths of the practice that can't be measured, and yet can always be fine-tuned and deepened, and learning the implications of anatomy and kinesiology, which hold great insight and ground our practice in the vehicle of the body. Each week, the relationships between the bones, joints and muscles will be discussed by region and then embodied through asana-based movement explorations. Open to yoga teachers as well as yoga and movement enthusiasts.

Teaching Asana With The Universal Principles of Alignment

The Universal Principles of Alignment are powerful tools that can profoundly enhance your yoga practice and teaching. By deepening your understanding of these biomechanical principles, you'll gain greater awareness of the physical, energetic, and spiritual dimensions of yoga.

This transformation not only enriches your personal practice but also allows you to share this wisdom with your students, passing on the gift of alignment and insight.

This module provides a comprehensive review and deeper understanding of the UPAs, focusing on their practical application, connection to anatomy and kinesiology, and their role in teaching asana confidently and skilfully.

Course Overview

This online course is designed to help yoga teachers, both new and experienced, enhance their teaching of Anusara Yoga by mastering the Universal Principles of Alignment (UPAs). While these principles are fundamental to all Anusara Yoga classes, the course also addresses challenges like weaving themes, improving observation and adjustment skills, and sequencing effectively. The module provides a comprehensive review and deeper understanding of the UPAs, focusing on their practical application, connection to anatomy and kinesiology, and their role in teaching asana confidently and skillfully.

Module 1: Mastering the Universal Principles of Alignment

This module dives into the core of Anusara Yoga’s alignment-based approach, blending form and flow to create stability, strength, and harmony in body, mind, and heart. Participants will review and refresh their understanding of the Universal Principles of Alignment (UPAs), exploring how these principles elevate both static poses and dynamic vinyasa. Through guided asana sessions and insightful demonstrations, teachers will gain practical techniques and renewed appreciation for the art of alignment-based teaching.

Module 2: Practicing the Art of Teaching Alignment

This section is all about hands-on practice. Students will refine their ability to teach and cue the Universal Principles of Alignment (UPAs) through practical teaching exercises. This collaborative approach builds confidence and hones teaching skills in a supportive environment.

What You'll Cover:

- Practice teaching the UPAs in one-on-one, small group, and round-robin formats.

- Develop clear and effective alignment-based cues.

- Receive constructive feedback from peers and mentors.

Module 3: Anatomy in Motion – Understanding the UPA Connection

This section links the UPAs with foundational anatomy and kinesiology concepts, giving students the tools to explain “what happens” in the body when applying the principles. You’ll gain insights into the muscles and bones involved, helping to demystify the alignment process for both teacher and student.

What You’ll Cover:

- Key anatomical terms tied to the UPAs:

- Muscular Energy

- Inner Spiral

- Outer Spiral

- Organic Energy

- Exploration of the anatomy behind the UPAs:

- Example: Learn how engaging “Muscular Energy” activates the peroneus muscles of the outer shins.

- Practice integrating basic anatomy into teaching cues for clarity and impact.

These practical modules will help you deepen your understanding of alignment while equipping you to communicate its principles with confidence and precision.

Module 4: Elevating the Practice – Refining Alignment Strategies

This section focuses on sharpening your understanding and application of the Universal Principles of Alignment (UPAs). By exploring when, how, and why to apply (or not apply) the principles, you’ll refine your ability to teach alignment with precision and adaptability.

What You’ll Cover:

- *The Impact of Engagement:*

- Explore how each UPA affects the body’s energy, action, and biomechanical integrity.

- *When Less is More:*

- Discuss situations where UPAs may not be appropriate or when too much explanation detracts from the practice.

- *Tailored Teaching Approaches:*

- Learn how to adapt UPA teaching for beginners versus advanced students.

- Develop techniques to balance technical instructions with accessibility and flow.

- *Pose Categories:*

- Apply the UPAs skillfully to various pose categories, understanding their unique biomechanical and energetic needs.

Module 5: Beyond the Physical – The Deeper Dimensions of Alignment

The UPAs are not just biomechanical principles; they are also expressions of energy and gateways to deeper philosophical and metaphorical meanings. This section invites you to expand your teaching by connecting alignment to the subtle, energetic, and poetic aspects of yoga practice.

What You’ll Cover:

- *Energetic Perspectives:*

- Understand the UPAs as flows of prana and expressions of Shakti within the body.

- *Philosophical and Poetic Insights:*

- Weave philosophical and metaphorical themes into your teaching, enriching your students’ experience.

- *Teaching with Depth:*

- Inspire a deeper appreciation of asana by integrating the subtle

purposes of the UPAs into your classes.

This final section brings together the technical and the transcendent, helping you guide students not only toward better alignment but also a more profound connection to themselves and their practice
